There’s a very cool App to help with the task called LOSE IT! and it’s free.

Just set your current weight and your weight loss goals. You enter everything you eat with a wonderful search menu. You can add foods you might prepare yourself, like enchiladas or casseroles. It also has lists of various brand name products as well as a wide selection of restaurants and their menu choices. Just select which meal you are entering, breakfast, lunch or dinner, even a snack is included. Then dial in the portion amount. Log any exercises you’ve done ( including home repairs like I’m doing now). Your total calories used are displayed and a tally showing how much more you have for the day based on your diet objective.
It even shares it among your computer, mobile device or the on-line website, so there’s never an excuse NOT to enter your data. By just monitoring what I’ve been eating, I’m seeing that I’ve already used my allotted calories for the day. I’m drinking a glass of water instead of another glass of wine…. and losing weight already. Not bad.
