On Ferguson

I am really trying hard to stay open minded and understand all the lessons coming out of Ferguson, but I keep going back to the security video I saw of Michael Brown stealing cigars from a minority store manager/owner in his own neighborhood. I sure wish Michael Brown had not stolen those cigars.

What I saw was a neighborhood punk, a bully, grab a handful of cigars with no regard for law or civil justice.  He didn’t steal food or medicine or something essential.  He stole cigars.  Then he turned and physically intimidated the shop manager into not perusing him.  He did not respect a police officer’s attempt to stop him.  Michael Brown at some point advanced toward a police officer in a manner that did not indicate compliance but rather, defiance.  That’s something that the comedian Chris Rock did a skit about – How to keep from getting your ass kicked (or shot) by the police.

Don’t steal.  Don’t be a bully.  Don’t be a punk. Respect other people, don’t steal other people’s property  and obey the law.

You won’t get your ass kicked by the police.
